Sidmouth
Poet Laureate John Betjeman was captivated by Sidmouth, describing it as a town “caught still in a timeless charm” in his famed “lost” poem Still Sidmouth. The seaside town is known for its clean beaches, friendly shops, leisurely walks and beautiful gardens, with many of its buildings retaining Georgian and Regency features.
Nestled beneath magnificent cliffs, Sidmouth is the perfect gateway to the Jurassic Coast; the hugely diverse and beautiful landscape of the coastline has a unique geology of global importance, which is why it was made an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Sidmouth Museum holds events exploring the World Heritage Site and information on the coastline’s history. The Sidmouth stretch of coastline also has beautiful sections of the South West Coast Path that lead to the nearby communities of Beer and Branscombe.
This stretch of coast has two beaches that are magnets for families; Jacob’s Ladder Beach and Sidmouth Town Beach, both lovely for soaking up some sunshine and having a fun day with the family.
