Ottery St Mary Tar Barrels

Join the excitement and community spirit of one of East Devon’s most extraordinary traditions, the Ottery St Mary Carnival Tar Barrels. Flaming barrels are carried through the streets, drawing locals and visitors together for a night of spectacle, heritage and camaraderie unlike anything else in the region. It’s a testament to the town’s rich history and vibrant culture, and an experience not to be missed.

This is a lively, crowded event with real fire close at hand, so it isn’t suited to everyone. It’s not recommended for young children, anyone with limited mobility, or pets, and pushchairs aren’t permitted. If you’re not comfortable around fire or large crowds, this one may not be for you.

A few things to know before you go: follow the instructions of event stewards and barrel marshals at all times (they wear high-vis), never try to run from an approaching barrel (step back and lean away instead), never touch a lit barrel, and leave fireworks at home. Mobile signal in town can be patchy on the night.

The event is glass- and plastic-free. Reusable cups are available to buy (or bring your own), and recycling points and bins are available throughout the town. Toilets are available at various points, including the car park behind the main street at Sainsbury’s.
